My stunning self-portrait. You can tell by this
work of art that I am not a professional photographer.

Schools are always looking for volunteers. We always need the help, and, thank goodness, we have some great people that step up and help out. But I also understand that not everyone can take time out of the day to volunteer in their local school.

So how can you help? If you are a parent, you can take an interest in what is going on in your child's education. Attend open houses. Meet your child's teachers. Make your parent-teacher conference a priority. Beyond that, we're asking for these three things:
  • Make sure your child gets to school on time. It is vitally important for your child to be in class, on time, from the first day of school until the last.

  • Make sure your child is doing his/her homework. Homework is rarely fun for any student, but it is essential in helping all student understand the skills they need to possess to be college and career ready. Even if you can't necessarily help them with their homework, keep asking if it is done.

  • Make sure your child reads for AT LEAST one half-hour every day. Reading is the most important skill your child may learn IN THEIR LIFETIME. If you can read, you can do anything else.
